A 2015 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 3500 was westbound on East Canaan Road in Litchfield County in the town of North Canaan when it crossed the double yellow centerline and struck an eastbound 2012 Volkswagen Jetta at about 9:40 a.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 29, according to Connecticut State Police.

The Mercedes then traveled across the eastbound lane and exited the roadway, striking a wooden telephone pole, police reported. 

The telephone pole reportedly split and fell into the eastbound travel lane.

The Mercedes came to a stop about 20 feet off the roadway, police said.

State Police said the Volkswagen was redirected across the eastbound lane and came to a stop about five feet off the roadway.

The driver of the Volkswagen, a 57-year-old man from Danvers, Massachusetts, was extricated from the car by North Canaan Fire Department and taken to a hospital for treatment of suspected serious injuries, police said.

The driver of the Mercedes, a 21-year-old man from Holyoke, Massachusetts, was extricated by Norfolk Fire Department Vehicle and hospitalized with suspected minor injuries, authorities said.
